as requested by the beautiful kari crimmins...

For A Boy With Oceans In His Eyes

he wanted to be free.

so, he took off his shoes

and walked barefoot through the cool, damp, grass

on that evening in april when it was colder than it should’ve been.

now, his brand new shirt is full of grass stains and

though it was said that he had no regrets,

there was still a grimace on his face from the

two identical green-brown circles he found on his elbows

that will forever remind him of that day.

sometimes he gets into the car and drives for miles --

anywhere far from this town where he can feel

the waves of an ocean crash beneath his toes

which he claims to love so dearly.

and for this i am eternally envious of

every fish,

every shell,

every grain of salt,

and every variable that comprises the contents of his beloved.

the sailors say that it glows at night

with a luminescence both peculiar and astounding.

maybe it’s the reflection of the stars sparkling up above,

or maybe it’s the moon casting its vast maternal light

on each individual ripple creating a sea of glitter

as far as any eye could see.

but either way,

i am prisoner to matron jealousy.

a thank you to the colorless water,

for i wish i could shine as bright as his ocean.
